UNDERSTANDING PERCEPTION
While living in Austin, Texas, Bret Stout was searching for an image of downtown for one of his clients - and it needed to be something visually dynamic. He searched and searched but could not find what he had in his head - a vision of downtown Austin in its 'purity'. Of course he couldn't find the right photo because it didn't exist.
You can't get the perfect image from one photograph.
In fact, photographs can often come across as stock images - and stock photography can often come across as cheesy and not visually-engaging.
Bret Stout knew it was more about the 'perception' of Austin he envisioned - and to achieve this he would have to create it. He knew he needed to create an image of Austin in the way it's 'perceived'. He did this by exploring a brand new way of creating a visual image – by taking very small 'pieces' of literally hundreds of photos and photo-compositing them into a new, never-before-scene image
– capturing a "perception of a perspective":
Bret Stout calls this photo-composite series, "Illusion of Perception".
Yes, when you see the above image you know it's Austin. You know it's the view from the hills to the West of Pennybacker Bridge (Loop 360). You can even recognize in the distance the Congress Avenue Bridge over Lady Bird Lake. But this is only a 'perception of perspective'. There is no angle of Austin like this. You never see Lake Austin connect with Lady Bird Lake from any angle. You don't see the Capitol from this angle.
BUT, this is how we see it in our 'mind's eye'.
In our 'mind's eye' the perspective above is accurate. What's interesting is the fact that perception is rarely accurate – BUT perception is never wrong. It's how we 'perceive' things - and everyone has their very own perception:
Same is true in marketing and advertising of your business - and how your potential customers view (and experience) your brand:
Now when that perception is SHARED with a larger segment, it is referred to as 'conventional wisdom' or 'shared perception':
Advertising and marketing is all about perceptions.
We must understand how our target audience 'perceives' our product, service, or category – and then we must look at ways to alter or enhance that perception. It's all about understanding their code of want and need. When we can alter or enhance their perception, we can drive action (consumer consumption).
Below are more 'shared perception' photo-composites Bret Stout created of Austin. As you can see, this can be done from an endless number of perspectives and perceptions:
And depending on the story you are trying to tell, a photo-composite can be created to tell that story. Like for growth and development:
For a different client in Austin, he wanted to create a photo-composite perception of Congress Avenue looking into downtown - all the way to the Capital:
And every angle could be created very differently depending on the objective of the story line (or a specific perception):
Next, Bret had a Dallas commercial real estate developer client who was looking to attract investors and companies to Texas. Bret came up with the slogan "It's Time to Rethink Texas" and he created a photo-composite of Texas that included four major cities (Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin):
For a large Dallas residential real estate agency client, he created two photo-composites for downtown Dallas AND included all of the rapid development of Uptown Dallas. Never before has the Dallas skyline been shown like this. Note: There is no photo like this - but it is very accurate in it's perspective:
The second execution would be a night view of the expanded Dallas skyline:
For a Texas law firm client who focused on Texas auto subrogation for insurance companies, Bret created a Texas photo-composite that showed all Texas downtown skylines as one. Even the State Trooper vehicle is a complete photo-composite. The idea here was that you must have car insurance to drive in Texas - and it didn't matter what city - the law is the same - have insurance or you will lose your driver's license. Because "A Texas driver's license is NOT a right, it's a privilege":
Bret Stout felt he had created something really unique here
with his Illusions of Perception photo-composite series. But could it be done on a much larger scale? Bret was about to find out.
For a Dallas hospital client whose focus was on environmental exposures and health, Bret came up with the idea to create a photo-composite of the entire United States.
A very ambitious endeaver that had never been done before.
It would start out with the blank canvas of the U.S. terrain (you can right-click to view larger image or simply scroll down this page):
And now he wanted to show an 'after' version that conveyed environmental exposures based on pollutants caused by progressive development in travel, manufacturing, energy exploration, etc.:
Never before has a photo-composite been created of the entire United States. If you zoom in on the image above, you will be able to see San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge on the left - and all the way to New York's Statue of Liberty on the right. Again, you can scroll down this page to see the larger version.
Bret Stout also created an Illusion of Perception photo-composite (but non-city-skyline) for a singer in Austin. Shelley Mac was born and raised in New Zealand. Here Bret created a 'mind's eye' perception of New Zealand - with Shelley as a little girl - composited with literally hundreds of photo pieces. Interestingly, Bret wanted to include a kiwi, a flightless bird, but didn't know where to put him. Then he decided to put it directly on the head of the dolphin - which reenforced the 'harmony' element. (scroll down below to view a larger version):
FORT WORTH'S PERCEPTION
Bret Stout moved to Fort Worth from Austin because what he does can be done from anywhere – and his wife wanted to move back to Fort Worth, the place of her birth and upbringing. So Bret and his wife moved their family to Fort Worth in 2012.
Interestingly, Bret knew very little about Fort Worth. While he lived in Dallas for nearly two decades, living in Deep Ellum and Fair Park warehouse lofts for 12 years, his 'perception' of Fort Worth was limited to 'Cowtown' and the Stockyards.
Bret Stout's Perception of Fort Worth was about to change.
It didn't take long for him to realize Fort Worth is an amazing city with so many attributes. Whether it's the arts, theater, music, schools, racing, hills, lakes, rivers, shopping, military, entertainment, sports, and even the culture and history of the stockyards, Fort Worth is one amazing city. To Bret Stout, it reminds him of how Austin was 30 years ago.
So how do you SHOW all of Fort Worth's great aspects? Why not in unique perspective photo-composites?
